Origin and connections

Holotropic Breathwork™ was created by psychiatrist Dr. Stanislav Grof and his wife, Christina Grof, based on decades of extensive research, experience from over 4000 psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy sessions, and spiritual traditions.

The roots of Holotropic Breathwork™ include:

  • Psychedelic therapies and rituals (MDMA, psilocybin/magic mushrooms, LSD, ayahuasca)
  • Modern Western psychology (humanistic and transpersonal approaches)
  • Eastern spiritual practices (meditation/mindfulness, yoga)
  • Ancient shamanic tradition (shamanic journeys, initiation and rites of passage)

The following methods are related to or contain certain elements of:

  • Psychological methods (experience-based, somatopsychic, altered state of consciousness, perinatal psychological and art therapy methods)
  • Mind-body methods (yoga, pranayama, Wim Hof Method, Rebirthing breathwork, movement meditation)
A radical inner transformation and rise to a new level of consciousness might be the only real hope we have in the current global crisis brought on by the dominance of the Western mechanistic paradigm.
